At a company meeting some years ago, the CEO stood up and read a list of my accomplishments for all to hear.

\nMy career in technology started on a help desk. The company was moving content from print into database software, and over the years I built several projects that measurably improved customer service. Everyone agreed, including the people who signed the checks.<\/p>\n
A teammate nominated me for Employee of the Year.<\/p>\n
I wasn’t in the room when the award was announced. My teammate got excited and started whispering my name as the CEO spoke. A department head immediately shushed him.<\/p>\n
“Wait for the announcement.” she pleaded.<\/p>\n
A few moments later, the CEO named my boss Employee of the Year.<\/p>\n
He hadn’t asked for it. He was mortified. He offered to split the cash award with me. I declined. (I might have taken the parking space that came with the honor but that wasn’t on the table).<\/p>\n
The manager who’d done the shushing, who soon became Head of HR, told the team it was “a great day for all of us.”<\/p>\n
Later on, the company opened twelve positions on the development team. I’d spent every workday up to this moment, learning the product, the customers and fixing every way either could break.\u00a0 I had also built and deployed a Help Desk app and a Sales Performance Tracking tool management loved and actively used.<\/p>\n
I made it through several interview rounds.<\/p>\n
The hiring manager finally told me they’d decided to open the jobs to outside candidates instead.<\/p>\n
Around the same time, headhunters started calling me. The company was planning to relocate headquarters and wouldn’t say precisely where. My twenty-minute commute had the very real chance of becoming ninety minutes on the freeway. I started looking elsewhere. Most of those twelve positions were not filled when I left the company some months later.<\/p>\n
I didn’t understand either decision at the time.
\n– I do now.<\/p>\n
Neither one was really about me. Giving the award to my boss kept the org chart tidy. Opening the jobs to outsiders avoided a harder conversation about what it meant when a help desk had quietly become a farm team nobody wanted to admit existed.<\/p>\n
Sometimes you’re too valuable where you are to get promoted.
\n– That’s a trap disguised as a compliment.<\/p>\n
Bad outcomes don’t require bad people. They just require a system nobody’s willing to question out loud.<\/p>\n
I spent the next few decades in technology, corporate offices and later public libraries, and I kept finding the same reflex wearing different clothes.<\/p>\n
